And that I did, go to that happy place, twice. 

Disneyland opened its doors July 17, 1955, and it opened its doors to me this past weekend for the first time. I decided to take a little time off work and go visit the original magical place for the first time in my life. 

Performing for Walt Disney World, I had already been aware that an influx of pixie dust was waiting for me as I stepped onto Main Street U.S.A…but something different happened. I didn’t feel fantasy, but the reality of magic. I was walking on the same exact ground that Walt Disney once walked on. I was riding some of the attractions that Walt himself helped to design and create. I was walking in Walt’s footsteps. It was a very humbling and emotional experience for me that I will never forget.

Istanbul

Istanbul

Istanbul—the name alone sounds exotic and mysterious.  My friend and I spent several days there at Easter and loved it!  The spring flowers were in bloom which was an added bonus.

Must see attractions include:

Hagia Sophia – Church completed in A.D. 537.  Fantastically beautiful!  If you can only see one thing in Istanbul, make this it!

Topaki Palace – Wander the grounds at your leisure and drink up the beauty!

The Grand Bazaar – One of the largest and oldest shopping areas in the world—4000+ shops!  Try some Turkish Delight (candy)!

Mosque of Slueiman the Magnificent and the Blue Mosque – The minarets (towers from which the summons to prayer are cried) symbolize Istanbul.  Take a tour inside the mosques.

Cruise up the Bosporus Strait – Sit back and relax and view the many palaces, etc., along the way.  Sail under the bridge connecting Europe and Asia!

Cistern – A “different” type of attraction!  It’s an ancient underground water storage area!  Look for the two Medusa heads!

One of the best things about Istanbul, however, is there are CATS EVERYWHERE!

During this trip we felt completely safe.  The people were very friendly and many of them speak English.  Watch out for the taxi drivers trying to cheat you at the Grand Bazaar!

Country countdown for 2012:  Goal is to visit 8 new countries this year.   2 down.  6 to go.

Mia's Morning in the Simulator

This morning, I got to experience a rare treat that few people ever get to experience - a trip in one of Delta’s MD-88 flight simulators.  These are a major training tool for the pilots of DELTA and other airlines.  They must log at least 1500 flight hours in a simulator before they can get behind the controls of an actual plane with passengers on it.

The noises, lights, controls, alarms, and feel were all very real.  I took off from LGA (La Guardia airport in NY), flew around Manhattan, past the Empire State building, around the Statue of Liberty, over Central Park and then did an approach and landing back at LGA.  On take off, I followed the same flight path as the pilot who landed the plane on the Hudson.  It is pretty eye-opening to see that it was less than 45 seconds from take to the point where he landed the plane.  What great skill and technique he had!

I only crashed once—on landing—but it wasn’t my fault.  As co-pilot (and a rookie), I relied heavily on the pilot to set the landing gear properly and to instruct me on what to do.  I accidently landed nose-gear first and not the tail gear. Oops!!!   I was able to retry an approach and landing and nailed it the second time.  Score!!!! It was super exciting.

Two of my co-workers were there as well.  One flew into, around, and landed at IAD (Reagan International airport in Washington, DC).  We saw the Washington Memorial, the White House and the Capital Building.  The other flew into, around, and landed at SFO (San Francisco International airport in San Francisco, CA).  We flew around Alcatraz, over the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean.  We were able to select weather conditions—turbulence, winds, storms, cloud coverage—as well as time of day.  It made for some pretty awesome flying.

Attached are some pictures of me and the flight simulator.  Needless to say, I am so excited and loved flying.  It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.  I wish/hope I can do it again one day.

Washington, D.C.

As I realize today is my 8 year anniversary with DGS, I find myself reflecting on how truly blessed I have been working here and thought I'd share a recent trip my son and I took.  On President's Day, we decided to FINALLY take that day trip to Washington, D.C. so many have recommended over the years.  It was definitely a trip we'll never forget.  There is SO MUCH to see and do free of charge or for a nominal fee.  We took the metro from the airport to the Smithsonian and began our sight-seeing tour on foot.  There are so many museums all along the "mall" with a wide variety of interests from art to history, space travel to botanical gardens, you name it...  There is something for everyone!  We walked from the Washington Monument to Capitol Hill, down Constitution Avenue to the White House and back down to our original starting point.  We walked more in that one day than I have walked in a month, but it was worth it!  I highly recommend seeing D.C. if you have not done so and DEFINITELY take your kids.  To see everything will take a few days, so we'll be back soon to see more sights!

Six States - One Day…No Way

After spending two wonderful days in Newport, RI, my husband and I had a leisurely morning before undertaking our drive through six states in one day. Yes, that’s right, six states in one day.

We left Newport and drove down US 1 along the coast to see how the rest of Rhode Island lived. As we enter Connecticut we got onto I95 and soon saw a sign for Mystic Seaport…we had to go. We toured this lovely little town and went to Mystic Pizza where Julia Roberts began her rise to stardom. We left Mystic and drove through New Haven, Bridgeport and Stamford before entering White Plains, NY.

We drove through New York City, into Newark, NJ, passed the lovely airport and down to Edison, Princeton and Cherry Hill.  Upon entering Philadelphia, PA we had to see some history. So we visited the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and of course the “Rocky” statue. Then we went to Gino’s for a Philly Cheese Steak. The traffic was terrible and the line was around the block…but it was worth it…my first Philly Cheese Steak experience!

Then we drove down to Wilmington, DE to see the sights, pick up a souvenir, and check off state number six.  We drove back to Philadelphia, spent a wonderful evening, and the next morning we boarded a beautiful Delta jet and headed home to Atlanta. 

And YES, got 1st class on all flights……what a way to go!!!!  Have we mentioned that we LOVE this travel benefit??????

 

Montego Bay, Jamaica

My friend and I went to Montego Bay , Jamaica for MLK Day. 

We took a day trip to Dunns River Falls and to Ocho Rios.  

I didn’t walk up the Falls on this trip—maybe next time!  

The jerked chicken and pork were as good as you have always heard.  

I loved these wooden carvings of Bob Marley!

Tiffney's Trip to Beijing

Let the record show that my trip to Beijing was FABULOUS!

When it comes to my travel, I love three things: business class, budget friendly countries, and off the beaten path.

This trip was the total package and I’m going back before Thanksgiving. - sorry Mommy L.

There is soooo much that I could blog about from my vacation.....The Temple of Heaven, Forbidden City, Ming Tombs, The Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, CHEAP shopping, daily spa treatments under $10, Peking duck dinners, more CHEAP shopping, Surviving a
rickshaw ride! I could go on but I’m sure you have an idea of what I did and how I got down in China .

Very rarely will I take guided tours but I felt it was necessary to see the Great Wall; I didn't want to waste my day crying because I ended up in the Gobi Desert! It simply can’t be explained in a blog, nor can pictures convey what it's actually like to experience the Great Wall. I’m still wrapping my mind around it. What does 240RMB for a guided tour of the Great Wall get you? The most memorable trip of a lifetime……

Easter in Ireland

Dublin is a great 3 day getaway from Atlanta!  For cheap transportation from the airport to the city center, take the Aircoach bus for approx. 7 EUR.  Look for the signs at the airport.  Dublin is a wonderful “walking” city.   Be sure to visit some of the great Irish Pubs in the Temple Bar area. 

If you get a chance, visit Malahide Castle.  Take the northbound DART to Malahide Station.  The castle is within walking distance from the train station.

Marilyn in Mexico

My niece had a destination wedding at the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar hotel in Riviera Maya. It is an all inclusive hotel, and the food was great. They did have several restaurants that you could make reservations at for your evening meal. It was a large resort, but they provided golf carts for transportation, or you could get your exercise by walking. The beach was also great, and there were plenty of chairs available for the sun bathers. They had beach volleyball and poolside activities if you wanted to participate. They had a gym, tennis courts, theater, disco, shopping center and a chapel. Parasailing and jet ski rentals were available for an additional fee. The staff was very friendly, and they made our stay very enjoyable. The best part was our family could all be in one location and enjoy the beautiful location and her special day together!

It's been a while since anyone submitted any travel stories, so I'll take this opportunity to share some of a family member's big adventure "Down Under".  My nephew, Chris Kittredge is currently touring with the popular alternative hip-hop band, "Arrested Development" in Australia and took some time out to share these awesome photos from Sydney and various other stops along the way.  Chris began drumming with his church band in his teen years and loved it so much he decided to study music in college to pursue a career in music full time.  In recent weeks, a guitarist for the band saw some of Chris's video clips online and called him up for an audition to accompany the band on their upcoming tour.  And as they say, "the rest is history!"

Chris and the band left Atlanta on Christmas Day to begin their tour in Queensland, Australia - arriving just as the flood waters were beginning to surround the area.  Thankfully, the band made it safely to their first gig and performed to a lively crowd in spite of the rains and continued on to their next stop under clearer skies.  Some recent stops have included Coolangatta, Melbourne, Vic, Perth, and here are some photos from Sydney.  After seeing images of this beautiful place, I will definitely be making plans to visit Australia myself in the near future!  Wish I were there now cheering on Chris...  I guess music is just in my blood... Actually, it runs pretty deep in this family.

Evelyn's Trip to Hawaii

Hello, my name is Evelyn Brown Wilder, and I am an employee of Delta Global Staffing.  Since joining DGS, I have been enjoying my flight privileges to the utmost!! My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Kona, Hawaii in June, and some co-workers and I spent 5 days this month (Oct) in Maui, Hawaii. This was my third trip to Maui so you see that I LOVE Maui, right? :-) I think I need a dual residency between Georgia and Hawaii :-)

These are just a few of many pictures that I have taken since being hired at DGS, and I thank God everyday for this opportunity. This job is God sent, and please believe I take it as just that.  I love what I'm doing at DGS working in the Sky Club....

Ok, will post some more pictures later after my trip to Dubai for my birthday leaving Nov. 28th to celebrate my birthday Dec 1st....

Cheryl's Weekend of Family Fun in Miami

 My daughter and grandkids had never been to South Florida, so off we went to visit “Uncle Brian” over Labor Day week-end. The kids had not flown since they were babies, and my daughter had not been on a plane for many years. Once we worked through what could and could not be taken on the plane (LOL) we were off for a full week-end of fun.

First stop Saturday morning was the Miami Zoo. We did not let 90+ temps and high humidity stop us as we spent hours and hours walking and riding around this beautiful zoo. It is amazing what they have done to restore the zoo after being destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

To cool off after the zoo we headed to the beach for a quick swim. Love the quiet natural beaches in the area, no South Beach for us.

Sunday morning we are off to Key Biscayne for a day on the water. Snorkeling the reef was amazing, watching the kids spot fish and even a shark, priceless. What a relaxing way to enjoy the beauty of the Keys.

Monday morning was filled with site seeing. The rest of the time we ate.  What an international city with many choices! Cuban was the most requested and devoured cuisine.  Many family memories were made.

Tiffney Washington - Ten Years

Ten years ago today I started a wonderful journey....  You know that humbling moment when you're looking down at a sea of clouds? It blows my mind every single time. It's symbolic of what I've experienced during the last ten years with Delta Global Staffing - the opportunity to work for a fabulous company, be a part of a wonderful team and make friends all over the world.

It had been a long time since I last visited “La Isla Del Encanto”, 10 years to be exact. The main purpose of this trip was to expose my better half to the beautiful island and to introduce my 5-month-old son to some of my family.



The weather was perfect, about 84 degrees, although they forecasted rain for the time that we were there.

We arrived in San Juan on Thursday afternoon around 1p.m. We caught the shuttle to AVIS to rent a vehicle. From there, we drove to the hotel. After checking into the San Juan Beach Hotel, we had a chance to relax for a bit before heading out to see all the sites San Juan had to offer.

First, we drove to “Isla Verde” to get a bite to eat and shop on the strip. Later that night, we drove by my grandparents’ house to say “Hola”. Our visit was an absolute surprise to them as they were not expecting us. We had a great time catching up with the family after such a long absence.

The next morning we started our day in “Viejo San Juan”. They had many events going on for Good Friday. We walked most of the time which later became exhausting, especially pushing the heavy stroller up those hills! There were a lot of events for tourists, including food and music. Most of the day was spent downtown followed by a nice dip at the beach before sundown. The water was warm, but the waves were high so we stayed close to shore.



Our last day in Puerto Rico was spent by visiting “El Morro”, a historical landmark in San Juan. We took many pictures and read up on the history that stretches over 400 years ago. It was a nice tour, but I was freaked by the large iguanas running around the site!

Later on that evening we got together with some cousins to celebrate a birthday at the “Old Harbor Brewery” in San Juan, where we ate and sipped a few drinks!!!

Sunday morning we flew back to Atlanta and relaxed. It was a really nice trip and we plan on returning sometime this Summer!!!

DGS is one of the best places to work. I started as a baggage handler in 2005 and transitioned to administrative assistant to General Manager Jack Wingo.

One of my most pleasurable moments was implementing the PAXTrack series, a unique dispatching system created to improve an airline’s ability to serve passengers needing special assistance. Other pleasures are working with a dynamic team at Hartsfield-Atlanta Jackson International Airport and traveling around the globe.

“To live is to travel”: my favorite motto. My journeys include the Netherlands, Japan, Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Senegal, and Panama. I have engaged in native customs/religions/occupations, eaten exotic foods, sipped magical potions, and delved into nightlife scenes. Unplanned. Educational. Downright entertaining.

Stay tuned for my uplifting travel stories. I have included a photograph of me and Senegalese students in Dakar.
